Global Iodine Deficiency Disorder Prevention Day observed in Tinsukia district

TINSUKIA: Along with the rest of the State, the Global Iodine Deficiency Disorder Prevention Day was observed in Tinsukia district on Thursday with an awareness rally formally flagged off by Dipu Deka, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Health, Tinsukia in the presence of Dr Altaf Ahmed, Joint Director of Health Services, Tinsukia and Dr Chandralekha Saikia. The ASHAs, ANMs and volunteers of ADRA NGO participated in the awareness rally.

Dipu Deka, the ADC i/c Health of Tinsukia, while addressing the participants, said that the World Iodine Deficiency Day was observed on October 21 across the world. "Iodine is an element present in salt and is needed to regulate the thyroid hormone in our body, which in turn is responsible for a person's overall growth. This day is observed in order to raise awareness regarding the importance of iodine in an individual's development," ADC added.

Highlighting the objectives, Deka said that the programme was aimed to bring the prevalence of iodine deficiency disorders below 5 per cent in the country and also to ensure 100 per cent consumption of adequate iodized salt in every household of the country.
