Guwahati : The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has enforced a ban on piling up of building materials near roads and on footpaths between 6 AM-10 PM. This new rule has been imposed to avoid bothering the public of the city. GMC will charge penalty on infringement of this rule by anyone.

On Wednesday night, GMC  imposed a penalty of Rs 7000 and Rs 4000 on two construction material dealers situated in Kanaklata road in the Hengrabari area of the city. Evidently, the public do suffer a lot because of the concentrated dumps on the roads. Unorganized parking and heavy traffic are considered to be the major issues faced by the citizens. GMC Commissioner MN Dahal said, " Traffic congestion is a a major issue in the city. All the departments concerned are doing their best to reduce it. People can dump building materials after 10 PM and must clear the area before 6 AM as traffic movement remains low during that time. The city slowly gets congested after 6 AM and traffic remains heavy throughout the day"

Along with the announcement of penalty, the GMC has provided a WhatsApp number for the public to report any sort of violation against the rule. It is important to highlight how the road traffic has worsened in the entire city because of the various constructions and projects of the national highways and flyovers. The piled up materials, street hawkers and unorganized parking of vehicles has only led to traffic congestion while putting an obstacle for the people walking on the pavements.

Dahal added that the citizens can use tin sheets to stock the building materials to avoid the flow of these materials in the drains and stop it from blockage. All of these has to be done within the assigned time period. He emphasized the need to avoid dumping practices and waste materials on the road. He also clarified that even though GMC has not yet put a heavy penalty on the rule breakers, it is important to make everyone more aware of the of the new rules and regulations.
