Goalpara District Health Society launched a drive against Leprosy

GOALPARA: The Goalpara District Health Society (DHS) has launched a large scale drive against the Leprosy disease and undertaken a door to door campaign from November 16 with an aim to identify, detect and give treatment to it.

“We have already organized awareness meetings in social places like namghar, masjid, temples etc. Besides, special DHS teams will visit door to door and interact with people regarding this social issue,” Dr. Jayanta Kumar Das, Joint Director of Health Services Goalpara in formed in a press meet on Friday.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Bichitra Bordoloi, district nodel officer of NLEP said, “Leprosy is an infectious disease and the germ works slowly. Though the affected person doesn’t die immediately but suffers for a long time. It affects the nerves and if not treated at time, organs may also get severely affected.”

Bordoloi further added, “The leprosy treatment has been provided free of cost by the government. There are seven patients undergoing treatment at this moment in Goalpara.” Meanwhile, Khurshed Alam, DPM emphasised upon knowing the symptoms of this disease and appealed all to come forward and eradicate leprosy from the society.
