DHUBRI: While there is a trend among high officials to get their children admitted in English-medium convent schools for better education despite having vernacular government schools around, Dhubri District Information and Public Relation Officer, Bikash Sarma (he got transferred in April this year to Barpeta and is posted in the same post and capacity), got his only son admitted in BC Memorial ME School in Dhubri town.

The daughter of Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Jain, an IAS officer in Madhya Pradesh, also got his daughter admitted in an Anganwadi school and he was praised for his decision.

When people of Dhubri came to know about Bikash Sarma's decision, they praised him for getting his son Birikh Sarmacharya admitted in a vernacular (Assamese) medium school. When contacted by The Sentinel, Sarma said that he could have got his son admitted in private and English-medium schools but opted otherwise. He said that as a government official if he preferred to send his child to a private English-medium school instead of a vernacular-medium school, then what would be the future of Assamese medium schools in the State?

"So I appeal to all the government officials to admit their sons and daughters in government Assamese medium school and make efforts to improve the standard of education of the schools," Sarma said.
