GUWAHATI: A housemaid in the residence of the Guwahati child abuse case accused doctor couple, Dr. Waliul Islam and Dr. Sangeeta Datta, has been arrested on Thursday in connection with the case.
The housemaid was arrested after evidence of her torturing the minor victims were found recorded on the home CCTV footage that was earlier recovered by the police from the doctor couple’s residence, sources said.
Earlier on Wednesday, in a major turn of events in the disturbing child abuse case in Guwahati, a journalist identified as Abhijit Bose, was arrested for his involvement in the case.
Abhijit Bose is the brother of the prime accused doctor Sangeeta Datta’s personal assistant. According to sources, Abhijit was arrested for providing means of support to his elder sister through conversations over the phone. He has been arrested under Section 120 (B), which pertains to providing protection to accused persons.
Later on the same day, accused in the child abuse case, Dr. Waliul Islam’s police custody was extended for a period of another 5 days by the court of the chief judicial magistrate in Guwahati.
After the completion of his five-day police custody, the city police had produced accused Dr Islam before the court.
An application seeking an extension of police custody of Waliul Islam for another five days had been moved by the city police.
Earlier on Wednesday morning, Dr Islam’s wife, psychiatric doctor Sangeeta Datta, the prime accused in the child abuse case, was taken to the forensic department of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for her health check-up from the Panbazar women police station.
Psychiatrist Dr Datta had also been remanded to a 5-day police custody earlier by the court, during which she was interrogated by the city police under the supervision of city police commissioner Diganta Barah himself.
Significantly, the Assam State Branch of the Indian Psychiatric Society demanded a detailed investigation into member Dr Datta's role and justice for the victims.
A statement released by the Society says:
In the ongoing allegations and investigations against one member Dr Sangita Datta along with some other persons, the Indian Psychiatric Society -Assam State Branch, the body of Psychiatrists of Assam, strongly condemns the act of Child Abuse and appeals to the concerned authorities to take utmost care of both the children in all aspects including their Physical and Mental health and pray for their speedy recovery and appropriate rehabilitation.
The body of Psychiatrists' of Assam demand a thorough investigation into the allegations and seek proper justice to the children as early as possible and trust that the administration will charge and punish the perpetrators and settle the serious matter at the earliest as per law of the land.
