Guwahati: City Police Seize Counterfeit Currency; Suspect Apprehended

GUWAHATI: In a significant operation conducted on Tuesday night, the Guwahati City Police successfully confiscated a substantial quantity of Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) while apprehending a key suspect.

Acting on a tip-off, a joint team from the West Guwahati Police District and Jalukbari Outpost swung into action against the illicit FICN trade, leading to the arrest of Mofidul Islam, a 29-year-old resident of the Bihpuriya area in Lakhimpur district. The operation took place near Bhupen Hazarika Samadjhi Sthal in Jalukbari.

Commissioner of Police, Guwahati, Diganta Borah, explained, "Following a thorough interrogation, it was revealed that Mofidul's associate, Rofikuddin of Laluk Islampur, Lakhimpur, was running an illegal FICN network at a rented house near Mirza Rail Gate.

Subsequently, a raid was conducted at Mirza Rail Gate on Tuesday night, leading to the discovery of a FICN Printing Machine and counterfeit currency totaling Rs 2,16,500, consisting of 433 fake notes in the denomination of Rs 500."

The police have initiated necessary legal proceedings against the suspects.

This operation follows a similar success on October 8 when a team from the West Guwahati Police District, Azara police station, raided a rented residence near the Airport belonging to Priyanka Das of Jalukbari. During the operation, the police seized FICN with a face value of Rs 55,000 in the 500 denomination, along with a FICN-making machine. Both Priyanka Das and her accomplice, Debojit Deori of Silapathar, were subsequently arrested in connection with the case.

Furthermore in September, in a successful operation against counterfeit currency or Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN), Assam Police was able to recover a large consignment of such notes from a businessman in the state. Lakhimpur police conducted an operation in the Bangalmara locality of the district. This raid led to the seizure of Fake Indian Currency Notes worth over Rs 20 lakh. A businessman was arrested in connection to this recovered consignment.
