GUWAHATI: In observance of the Janmotsav of Srimanta Sankardeva, September 24 has been declared a "dry day" in Kamrup-Metro district, including Guwahati city. The announcement was made by the Kamrup-Metro district administration through an official order.

This decision, in accordance with Rule-326 (b) of the Assam Excise Rules, 2016, means that all wholesale/bonded warehouses, composite license/microbrewery license, IMFL/Beer retail 'OFF' and 'ON' shops, including Club 'ON' and Country Spirit Shops in Kamrup Metropolitan District, will remain closed on Sunday, September 24.

The order emphasized that any violation of this declaration would lead to penal action as per the relevant provisions of the Assam Excise Act and Rules. Guwahati residents and establishments are encouraged to adhere to this "dry day" in observance of the Janmotsav of Srimanta Sankardeva.

“Accordingly, all Wholesale/Bonded Warehouse, Composite License/Microbrewery license, IMFL/Beer Retails ‘OFF’ and ‘ON’ shops including Club ‘ON’ and Country Spirit Shops of Kamrup Metropolitan District will remain closed i.e. ‘Dry Day,” the order reads.

“Any violation of the order will attract penal action as per relevant provisions of Assam Excise Act and Rules,” it added.

Meanwhile, in a shocking act of theft in broad daylight, a bold bike-borne thief targeted Guwahati's recently inaugurated Nilachal flyover, making off with numerous lights that adorned the structure. Guwahati's Nilachal flyover, inaugurated just last month, had boasted state-of-the-art lighting installations that illuminated the structure at night, impressing both local residents and authorities. However, the audacious act of theft left the community stunned.

A resident captured the thief's brazen act on video, showing the biker deftly dismounting a light fixture and loading it onto his motorcycle. Sources indicate that the contractor responsible for the flyover had initially installed 1,300 lights during its inauguration, but a startling 600 of them have already been stolen. In response to the thefts, a formal complaint was lodged, leading to the subsequent arrest of three suspected thieves by the police.

Nevertheless, this recent incident in the city of theft underscores the ongoing challenge of deterring such criminals in the area.
