GUWAHATI: The Save Bharalu Abhiyan along with the Guwahati Municipal Corporation organised a cleanliness drive on the banks of the Mora Bharalu River in the city on Sunday as a part of their initiative towards the rejuvenation of the waterways of the city.
The initiative to clean the banks of the river was carried out in the Barshapara locality of the city on November 26. This initiative comes a week after another initiative taken by the same organisation towards the cleaning of the Jatiya locality of the city encouraging people to dispose off their garbage with care in designated areas only. GMC Commissioner Megh Nidhi Dahal had also taken part in the previous initiative and attempted to share awareness regarding the same.
Several key officials of the organisation, including the president of the Save Bharalu Abhiyan Dr Robin Majumder were also present as the volunteers attempted to remove as much plastic as it was possible. Junior Engineer of GMC Simanta Goswami was also present during the initiative along with workers from the GMC who also helped in the cleanup.
A talk regarding the necessary awareness of improper garbage disposal as well as the environment in the area because of the garbage was conducted in the location. The necessity of proper garbage disposal as well as the need for proper garbage disposal was also discussed in this meeting.
The representatives of the organisation also mentioned in the gathering that the irregular garbage collection by those responsible for the same is a key cause of why certain places are dumped with garbage. He also pointed out the lack of an ample number of dustbins in public areas for people to dump the garbage on the go. He also called on the public to utilise whatever facility has been given by the authorities and not to throw away the waste on the side of the road.
