GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Jal Board confirmed the Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA) water delivery would resume on June 5 shortly after Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) Mayor Mrigen Sarania assured the city's residents of that fact. On Sunday, the GMC confirmed the news on Twitter.

According to available information, the water supply has been cut off while technical experts from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) look into the infrastructure's general condition and the process problem. The repair work is apparently going to start once all testing and monitoring is accomplished.

The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), which oversees the city of Guwahati, has come under heavy criticism from Gauravv Somani, secretary of the Assam State Congress and head of the AIPC state section for Assam.

Congress leader Somani claimed that the AIPC has been inundated with complaints from all around the city accusing the GMC water tankers of supplying water that is filthy and appears to be completely infected with hazardous bacteria and germs.

“The entire city is facing the scarcity of drinking water amidst such scorching heat. The city residents have started coming out on the streets registering their protest. On the other hand GMC water tankers and private water tankers are delivering complete dirt and contaminated water to the city residents which have become a more serious threat to one’s health,” Somani alleged in a statement.

Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) Mayor Mrigen Sarania responded on Saturday to the transport department's recent decision to seize private vehicles providing water, saying he had asked them to temporarily stop their drives against those vehicles.

This is happening while a severe heat wave grips Guwahati, creating a drinking water problem. The private cars distributing water throughout Guwahati will continue to run as usual, according to Sarania.

Notably, the Guwahati Jal Board recently suspended JICA water delivery due to a water pipeline burst incident in the Kharguli area while Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) technical specialists investigated the infrastructure and the source of the problem. It is believed that when all tests and monitoring tasks are finished, the repair work will begin.

“Based on a High Court order, the transport department had launched the drive against these private vehicles, but, since there is a scarcity in the city after the water pipeline burst incident in the Kharguli area. I had a word with the DC Kamrup Metro and DTO Transport and have requested them to halt their operation for the time being. I am being informed that these private vehicles have no authentic permit for supplying water, but since there has been a widespread water scarcity, on humanitarian grounds, we must allow them to supply water,” said Mayor Mrigen Sarania to the media.
