GUWAHATI: The incident of the late Saturday night’s violent clash in the city over language usage took a curious turn when the police allegedly released the accused youths at the behest of an influential person.

It has been reported that just a few hours after the incident, the youths involved in the violent clash were released without a proper inquiry.

The reportedly drunk youths, said to be non- Assamese, were detained after they attacked some restaurant workers over the use of Assamese language. Sources said that the Dispur Police allegedly released them immediately after receiving a phone call from an influential person on Sunday.

Sources informed that the police released three out of the five youths detained for their involvement in the violent clash without investigating the matter. The police are also accused of trying to cover up the incident after they allegedly received a phone call from some person wielding power.

It is also being alleged that the officials of Dispur Police Station are trying to conceal the identities of the detained youths.

To recap the incident, a group of five Hindi-speaking young men said to be in an inebriated state, came to eat at a restaurant in a Mahindra Thar vehicle. However, even as they were ordering their food, they sparked off a violent clash at Barbie Hotel and Fast Food in ABC Point after the staff members reportedly conversed in Assamese language. The youths reportedly physically assaulted the staff of the eatery.

Bystanders who witnessed the attack on the hotel staff at the site intervened to prevent the situation from escalating further. However, the situation became uglier when the five individuals then got into a physical altercation with some of the public. Soon the situation turned volatile as the agitated crowd turned their anger onto the vehicle in which the youths came in, damaging the Thar vehicle belonging to the youths.

News of the incident soon spread and upon receiving a report about the incident, personnel of the Bhangagarh police outpost promptly arrived at the scene. They managed to apprehend three of the five youths involved in the scuffle, while the remaining two managed to escape.
