Guwahati: Two brokers, who were earlier freed from police custody by Algapur MLA Nijamuddin, have been re-arrested by Hailakandi Police. This arrest was made under the supervision of the Superindent of Hailakandi Police, Gaurav Upadhyay.
Earlier, the Hailakandi police had no option but to free the two brokers as there was no prima facie evidence against the two. This has happened after the intervention of the AIDUF MLA Nijamuddin.
The arrests were made in connection to the statewide crackdown of land brokers by Assam Police. By Monday night, about 520 brokers had been arrested all across the state. While a number of them had been produced before the court, some could not be taken to the court due to a lack of prima facie evidence.
This initiative was taken by the Assam government in an effort to make government offices and other institutions of the state free from brokers.
Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "Break all nexus with brokers. I know that a section of officials even demands money for issuing death certificates."
The names of at least 700 land brokers have been included in the target list of the Assam police.
On Wednesday, the Chief Minister informed, "We have arrested the land brokers intending to dissuade the public from taking their help to get their works done. We appeal to the people not to approach any middlemen to get land-related works done. The public should do their land-related works themselves, even if that takes a day or two days more. I warn the officials that if we pursue, more skeletons will tumble out of the closet. You need to sever your ties with brokers and try to render the best services to the people."
"Brokers are the products of red tape in offices that compels the public to approach middlemen to get their works done. Besides taking action against brokers, office systems need streamlining. Sometimes, circle officers, ADCs (revenue) get telephone calls from the top asking them to do land-related works by going out of the way. It makes an inlet for middlemen to enter the system," a senior police officer added.
