Health Minister Keshab Mahanta visits Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital

In the wake of the tensed situation prevailed due to controversial death of a pregnant woman with her baby

LAKHIMPUR: In the wake of the tensed situation prevailed due to controversial death of a pregnant woman with her baby, Health and Family Welfare Minister Keshab Mahanta visited the Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital (LMCH) on Saturday.

Notably, the tensed situation prevailed at the newly inaugurated LMCH on June 2 when Kanya Patgiri of Gahpur allegedly died during caesarean operation due to no supply of fuel in generator and doctor's dereliction. Later, the victim's family filed a complaint about the incident at the North Lakhimpur Police Station. "My wife was admitted to the LMCH on May 31 around 6:30 pm. But the doctor has been neglecting the treatment from the very beginning. And finally, on June 2, my wife was taken to the surgery room for cesarean delivery. In the meantime, power services were suddenly disrupted in the surgical room. The doctor then delayed the undergoing surgery as there was no fuel in the generator. As a result, my wife died," said Prane Patgiri, husband of the deceased, in his police complaint. Various organizations of the district also demanded a proper inquiry into the incident.

While visiting the LMCH, Keshab Mahanta held an urgent meeting with the Superintendent, principal, doctors and other employees of the medical institution. Lakhimpur MP Pradan Baruah, Deputy Commissioner Sumit Sattawan, ADC (Health) Geetali Duworah, district unit BJP president Phanidhar Baruah were also present in the meeting.

During the course, the Health Minister took stock of the situation in LMCH and interrogated all concerned about the incident. He instructed the LMCH authority to ensure that such incidents should not happen in future.

Further, he instructed the APDCL and PWD (Building) officers of Lakhimpur to supply electricity to LMCH regularly and to keep power generator operational always for emergency use. He instructed LMCH management committee president MP Pradan Baruah and the principal to hold management community meeting on June 8 to review the present status and to submit report to the Health Department to address the shortages.
