DOOMDOOMA: The heavy erosion that is going on unabated in the Hatighuli area of Saikhowa in Tinsukia district since the last week, has posed a threat to more than 50 villages in its vicinity.

According to reports, the erosion is taking place at Phelai and already a huge plot of land measuring 500 metres long and 30 metres in width, was eroded away by the river which was flowing just 30 metres away from the existing dyke of the water resource department. If the erosion goes on unchecked at this rate, the dyke will not be able to protect the villages in its vicinity. The villagers are therefore, becoming apprehensive every passing day as the river is fast approaching them because of erosion.

The matter was brought to the notice of Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika by Binod Kedia, president, Dibrugarh-Tinsukia District Flood and Erosion Resistance Struggle Forum (DTDFERSF). On receiving order from the minister, the departmental engineers did visit the site and placed some geobags as an erosion-control measure but in vain. The DTDFFERSF has therefore demanded of the government to take permanent flood and erosion control measures in Hatighuli area, which falls in high flood-prone zone, after the rainy season.
