BISWANATH CHARIALI: Wearing helmet has been made mandatory for all government employees and school and college students in Biswanath from now on, as per the guidelines of the Transport Department of the Government of Assam in order to reduce the trend of accidental deaths. In this regard, Additional Deputy Commissioner and Sub-Divisional Magistrate in-charge of Biswanath Subdivision, who is also the Chairman of the District Road Safety Committee (DRSC), sent an urgent letter to the heads of all the government offices of Biswanath and Gohpur sub-divisions, the principals of Biswanath College of Agriculture and other colleges, the Inspector (in-charge) of the schools of Biswanath and the headmasters of all the schools. The letter has asked to take strict steps to comply with the rules and regulations related to road safety by forming Transport Management Committees in every educational institution as per the directions of the Transport Department of the Government of Assam.

It may be mentioned here that the Director of Department of Higher Education, Government of Assam, sent a special letter to the Transport Department of the state regarding road safety. Accordingly, on the basis of a letter of the Commissioner of State Transport Department and Member Secretary of the State Road Safety Council, dated May 19, 2023, such steps have been taken to reduce accidental deaths in Biswanath as in other districts.

Significantly, the trend of road accidents and deaths has increased in the first four months of the current year ending April, 2023 and road accidents have increased by 8% and there has been an increase of 12.25% over such period in the previous year.

The transport department’s letter cited such alarming information and termed it as unfortunate that a large number of two-wheeler riders or co-riders die due to road accidents every year for not wearing of helmets. Therefore, the Deputy Commissioners of the State and the chairmen of the road safety committees have been asked to take immediate action in this regard.
