GUWAHATI: Lok Sabha member Hema Malini apologised on Twitter on Friday regarding a previous post on the same website which had triggered an outrage among the Assamese people on social media.

In a message aimed towards wishing people of multiple places of the country on the occasion of several important cultural and social-religious festivals organised during these days, the former Hindi film actress called the most important festival of Assam, to be the festival of Bihar.

“It is the Harvest season now. Tamizh Puthandu (New year), Baisakhi (Punjab), Bihu (Bihar) and Pohela Baisakh or Naba Barsha (Bengal) are some of the festivals celebrated. Wish you all a wonderful festival month.” Tweeted Hema Malini on Thursday, which triggered a severe backlash for her ignorance about the people and their festival.

On the morning of Friday, she gave another tweet apologising, “By mistake, I have put Bihu is a festival celebrated in Bihar. I am sorry! That should read Bihu, festival of Assam”

Notably, on the same day that the politician had made this comment on Twitter, the state of Assam set the world record for the largest Bihu dance group performing at a venue. Over 11100 boys and girls from different parts of the state of Assam displayed a very beautiful presentation of the traditional dance and music to set the world record in the presence of representatives from the Guinness World Records.

Even the Prime Minister of the country, Narendra Modi is scheduled to take part in another performance on Friday before he hands over the certificates of the World Record-making events to the participants of the Mega Bihu celebrations.

"Every girl of Assam can dance Bihu. There was a question as to where we could get over 10,000 Bihuwatis. For Assam, Bihu is not a number. It’s something we all have in the core of our hearts. Days will come when we will be able to make more such records with more danseuses and dhulias," the Chief Minister mentioned while thanking all the participants for their two-month-long practice for the mega event.
