BOKAJAN: Suspected heroin weighing 384.56 grams worth Rs 2 crore was seized in an operation at Dilai Tinali in Karbi Anglong district bordering Nagaland on Saturday morning. The driver of the vehicle was arrested in this connection. An Alto car bearing registration No AS 04 E 0781 was also seized. The arrested driver has been identified as Asemong Thupitor (33), son of Dhuluta Thupitor of New Thiwati Village (Meluri town) under Meluri police station of Nagaland's Phek district. He was presently staying in Signal Colony of Dimapur.

"Based on a secret intelligence input, we have set up a special Naka at Dilai Tiniali under Dilai police station at around 10.15 am. The vehicle coming from the Dimapur side was intercepted. On being searched, 30 soap boxes of heroin weighing 384.56 grams were recovered," said John Das, the sub-divisional police officer (SDPO), Bokajan.

"The consignment was hidden in a secret chamber behind the passenger seat," Das said. "We are interrogating the driver and examining his statement for further course of action," Das added. Bokajan-Laharijan-Khatkhati has been a transit point for drug trafficking from Nagaland to Assam and other parts of the country. On August 2, the police seized drugs worth Rs 15 crore from Karbi Anglong, which was one of the biggest seizures of drugs in the hill district.

Since May 2021, the police have seized drugs worth Rs 900 crore and arrested 6,800 people. But there is no let-up in the situation.
