GUWAHATI: India's ace sprinter from Assam, Hima Das took oath as a Deputy Superintendent of Assam Police (DSP) in presence of imminent state ministers in Guwahati on February 26.
Hima Das was handed over an appointment letter by Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal at the Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati.
The DSP insignia of the Assam Police were clipped on Hima Das' shoulders by Assam CM Sonowal and DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta.
Assam Police in a tweet wrote, "Welcome Aboard! Heartiest Congratulations to @HimaDas8 and all 597 newly selected Sub Inspectors of Assam Police. Together, we'll write a new saga of people-friendly policing in the State, to serve the citizens of Assam."
Notably, Hima Das's appointment came after the Assam cabinet meeting chaired by the Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal at Dispur decided to appoint Das as DSP in Assam.
Further, the cabinet decided that sportspersons of the state would be appointed as Class-I and Class-II officers in different department of the state like Police, Excise, Transport etc, government spokesman and Industry minister Chandra Mohan Patowary told reporters.
Medal winners in Olympics, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games will be appointed as Class- I officers.
Meanwhile, Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju has made it clear that ace sprinter Hima Das — who will be appointed as the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in Assam Police — will "keep running for India" in the future as well.
On Wednesday, the decision to appoint Hima as DSP was taken in an Assam cabinet meeting chaired by the Chief Minister SarbanandaSonowal in Dispur.
"Many people are asking, what about Hima's sports career? She is training for Olympic qualification at NIS Patiala and will keep running for India," Rijiju said in a tweet. "Our elite athletes are employed in various jobs yet continue to play. Even after retirement, they'll be engaged in promoting sports," he added.
