GOLAGHAT: The chief minister of Assam inaugurated a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) station and a gas pipeline in the Goloaghat district of Assam. This project has been created under the state government’s initiative to make green energy more popular in the state of Assam.

Himanta Biswa Sarma mentioned about this development in the green energy sector in a tweet. It said, “Setting up of CNG stations is a step towards popularising green energy in Assam. In the past two years, there is peace and a positive atmosphere in our state. We will be soon able to set new milestones in industrialisation in Assam."

The gas obtained from the Hazarigaon block will be one of the prime sources towards the fuelling of the 100 eco-friendly Compressed Natural Gas powered busses being run by the state government in the capital city of Guwahati. It will also support the tree growers of the state by catering to atleast a part of the fuel requirement of the industry.

Cairn Oil & Gas has already signed a sales agreement with Assam Gas Company Limited (AGCL) to sell 3.5 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of gas from the Hazarigaon gas field. Cairn Oil & Gas had also stated that the Hazarigaon field awarded in the DSF-II auction is the first of the Discovered Small Fields (DSF) block in the Northeastern part of the country.

Commenting regarding the new gas production asset, the CEO of Cairn Oil & Gas Nick Walker mentioned, "We are delighted to become the first company to commence operations from a DSF block in the northeast region."

This new project is expected to not only sustain the small fleet of public transportation buses but also to encourage the use of CNG in private as well as commercial vehicles in the state.
