Hindus Are Minority In Several Districts of Assam, Says CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday informed that statistically Muslim community is now in majority in Assam and some districts have less than 5000 Hindus.

GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the Muslim community in the state is no longer a minority community as Hindus are found to be the minority in many districts.

As informed by the Chief Minister the Muslim community in Assam is the largest in the entire state according to the statistical data.

He made it clear that there is a majority of Muslim people in Assam and it is not just his opinion but it is statistically proven.

The CM stated that when Hindus are not a majority in a state one can declare them as a minority, therefore, he requested that when a Hindu Community is not a majority in a district they need to be declared as a minority.

He added that there are many districts of Assam where the Hindu community is clearly the minority with a large section of people from the Muslim community. Some of the districts even have less than 5,000 people from the Hindu religion.

Earlier the chief minister informed that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) will be reviewed in a fresh and will be conducted again for accuracy and correct data.

It may be mentioned that in the previously published list of NRC presented in August 2019 the names of over 19.06 lakh people out of a total of 3.3 crore applicants were not added.

CM Sarma said that the state government is holding several talks with the leaders of the All Assam Students Union (AASU) to discuss the matter of NRC being reviewed once again.

The state Agriculture Minister also informed about the recent NRC update saying that the government will move to the Supreme Court seeking the re-verification of the last published NRC list.

The AASU advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya agreeing with the decision of the state government said that it is very important that the NRC list is verified once again so that Assam becomes free from illegal Bangladeshis.
