NALBARI: The recent increase of HIV positive cases has rocked the district. Officer Dr Dwipen Das of Aids Control Department said that 150 more HIV positive cases were detected in the district. Most of the cases are Injecting Drug Users (IDU) and MSM. Some NGOs are working on this.

According to sources, many places of the district have been detected as hotspots of this disease. They claim that people detected by NGOs are usually found with high risk. Social stigma and ignorance forbid people to go for tests. HIV is transmitted through heterosexuality, homosexuality, blood transmission, needle syringe, parent to child and many unidentified reasons. Increasing rate of transgender and homosexual in the district has also been a major cause to ponder. "Before more than 87% of HIV positive cases were from MSM, but recently IDU cases has also increased in a very short period," said a volunteer. "Government has sufficiently supplied contraceptive measures to protect HIV," said an NGO worker.
