SP Padmanath Barua sends strong message to drug smugglers

SILCHAR: Myanmar to Mizoram or Manipur then to Barak Valley has been the well treaded route of smugglers to trade in drugs and all sorts of contraband goods. Check-gates are dozed past surreptitiously or by taking recourse to greasing the palms of those who man them. But, their access to the valley is now a hard thing due to strict watch of police and security forces. Still, they find space to smuggle in.
Once caught, the smugglers lose all that they bring and face jail term. Braving the odds, 4 persons including the driver of the vehicle fell into the dragnet of Ratabari police of Karimganj district on Friday.
In fact, Ratabari police was on alert after receiving information that high priced drugs in packets were being carried from Mizoram for smuggling them out to Bangladesh through the Patharkandi jungle route. The police was on vigilance at different locations of Ratabari for the last three days and succeeded in detaining the smugglers and seizing the car used for the illegal transportation. Karimganj SP Padmanath Barua warned the smugglers "Give up smuggling or face dire consequences."
On the advice of the SP, Ratabari OC Ratan Das with his police team has been monitoring the movement of vehicles from Mizoram and signalled a car to stop. The interrogation of the passengers and the driver individually did raise suspicion. The dicky was opened which contained packets of drugs, valued at Rs 8 crore in the market. These were to be taken to Bangladesh. Drugs in fact turned out to be 2.30 lakh yaba tablets.
The smugglers have been identified as Nazir Uddin, Sahab Uddin, Sultan Hussain and Jabir Hussain, all between the age ranging from 26 years to 29 years and hailing from different locations of Patharkandi. They all are now in the custody of Ratabari police for further cross-examination. Alto car has been seized.
