BISWANATH CHARIALI: A two-day ICSSR-sponsored national seminar on the topic “Problems, Issues and Sustainable Development in Contemporary Indian Society” began on Monday at Biswanath College which was hosted by the Department of Education of the college in collaboration with IQAC, Biswanath College of Education and supported by IQAC, Biswanath College. The inaugural programme of the seminar, chaired by Dr Chinta Mani Sharma, Principal of Biswanath College, was addressed by Prof Gayatree Goswamee, former Head, Department of Education, GU and Dean, USTM, Meghalaya as the keynote speaker.

In her lecture, Prof Goswamee dwelt at length on major themes of the seminar including sustainable and equitable social development, gender inequality, women empowerment, domestic violence and dowry system, social injustice and old-age problems. To be successful as a teacher and as a person, one must be passionate about one’s job, she observed. She also stated that obtaining a degree does not make a woman educated and empowered. Girls and women can claim to have proper education only when they will be able to say ‘no’ to dowry and other social evils, she said. According to her, integrity of character is a value to be cherished.
