Guwahati: A research team of the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG) has developed an energy-saving and environment-friendly technology for cooking stoves which has now been handed over for production and commercialisation to an industry partner.
The institute's research team belonging to the mechanical department headed by P Muthukumar had developed 'Porous Radiant Burners' (PRB) that can be used in cooking stoves to save up to 25% to 50% fuel. The burners are compatible with LPG, Kerosene and Biogas.
As per the statement of IITG, it has been stated, "The MoU for this technology transfer was signed on Thursday. This effort will be major contribution of IIT Guwahati towards the government's efforts to enhance access to clean cooking energy by promoting LPG, biogas and improved cook-stoves (ICS) through various policies and programs."
The industry partner that had been handed over the responsibility of commercialisation is M/s. Agnisumukh Energy Solutions Private Ltd, Bangalore.
Speaking to the national media, team leader P Muthukumar highlighted the technology's unique features and informed that double-layered PRBs which are equipped in cookstoves can save up to 25%-50% fuel and reduce emissions by about 80%. The PRBs can work excellently with LPG, biogas and PNG for both domestic and community/commercial purposes. Moreover, it is also adaptable to liquid fuels such as kerosene, methanol, and ethanol.
The director of IITG, T.G Sitharam, added that the PRBs can save fuels up to 50,000 annually.
