GUWAHATI : Professor TG Sitharam, Director of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, has been appointed as the new Chairman of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). The Ministry of Education has appointed Sitharam to serve as the Council headfor a period of three years or till he reaches the age of 65 years, whichever comes first.
TG Sitharam will take over from UGC chairman Jagadesh Kumar. Kumar was holding the AICTE chairman post after Anil Sahasrabuddhe was released from his duties on 1st September 2021, after he attained the age of 65 years. Now that Sitharam has been appointed as the Chairman of AICTE, the post of director in IIT Guwahati is vacant.
Prof. Dr. T.G Sitharam had taken over as Director of IIT Guwahati on 1st of July 2019. He worked as a senior professor in the civil engineering department at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He served also as a Chair professor in Energy and Mechanical Sciences department at Indian Institute of Science. T.G Sitharam pursued his PhD in Civil Engineering from University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.
In 2015, he received IGS Kuckleman Award for his life time contributions in Geotechnical Engineering. He has also been awarded with the Prof. Gopal Ranjan research award from IIT Roorkee in 2014, for his fantastic contribution in Geotechnical Engineering in India. He was also the recipient of 1998 S.P Research award from SP research foundation, USA.
T.G Sitharam was also the founder Chairman of Centre for Infrastructure, Sustainable Transport and Urban Planning at IISc, Bengaluru. He is also the founder President of International Association for Coastal Reservoir Research registered in NSW, Australia. Born in Karnataka, Sitharam is known for his excellent work in the field of rock mechanics, rock engineering and geotechnical earthquake engineering. He is an elected fellow of Indian Geotechnical Society, Institution of Engineers (India) and American society of Civil Engineers.
