GUWAHATI: Following
the order of High Court of Gauhati, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)
has withdrawn the termination on a student who was accused of rape.
The Gauhati HC in an order dated on October 7, 2021, said that the "learned senior counsel for the respondents in the IIT, upon instruction, has made a statement that the authorities in the IIT would like to proceed against the petitioner by giving adequate opportunity as required under the law. In view of such statement, it is to be understood that the impugned order of termination would not be acted upon. However, it would be open for the respondents in the IIT to proceed in any manner by following any procedure and any requirement as may be available under the law."
Earlier, a student of IIT-Guwahati who was accused of rape a female student on March 21, was expelled from the institution. The official of IIT-Guwahati in their report said that the act of the student was gross indiscipline and had violated the students 'code of conduct which had to be strictly deal with by the institute. Earlier the Gauhati High court had granted bail to the student calling him a "future asset".
Earlier on September 03 the DOSA (The Dean of Students Affairs) updated the Senate about the final recommendation of the students' disciplinary committee (SDC) meeting and has decided to terminate the student from the institute. The police on April 03 this year arrested a 21-year old student for allegedly raping a female student on March 28. In a signification development the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IIT-G) has bagged two ranks in National Institutional Rankings Framework (NIRF) Ranking 2021. Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Thursday virtually announced the NIRF Rankings 2021 in which Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IIT-G) has achieved 7th rank and 8th in over all. The report has also informed that IIT Madras has bagged top rank in the NIRF ranking.
