Illegal encroachers assault officials and police officers in Jamugurihat

JAMUGURIHAT: Sensation prevails in Jamugurihat due to a clash between some suspected encroachers and civil administration of Jamugurihat on Thursday. A large area of government land in southern Jamugurihat has been encroached upon since long. The Sonitpur district administration had carried out eviction drive in Chakighat area; the southern part of Jamugurihat. But after eviction drive, the encroachers continue to encroach the government land time and again. On Thursday, a team of government officials, including Circle officer of Naduar Revenue Circle, Akashdeep Kakati, Officer in-charge of Jamugurihat Police Station, Pranjal Kumar Nath and land surveyors of Naduar revenue circle, visited the disputed land to vacant the illegal encroachers and to hand it over to the legal owners. But in the meantime, a mob of the doubtful people who had encroached upon the land illegally, attacked the administrative officials with dao, khukuri, spade and bamboo sticks.

While trying to suppress the aggressive mob, Officer in-charge Jamugurihat Police Station, Pranjal Kumar Nath, Naduar Revenue Circle Office Aksahdeep Kakati, land surveyor Mansh Bora along with 12 others sustained head and leg injuries. To control the aggressive mob, Jamuguhat police opened fire. When the news spread, Padma Hazarika, MLA of Sootea LAC, visited the site and condemned the incident. Nomal Mahato, the Superintendent of Police of Sonitpur, also arrived at the incident site and said that an inquiry would be carried out and the culprits would be put behind bars.

Government land has been encroached upon by doubtful people in the southern part of Jamugurihat, including Chakighat, laletapu, Makuwa Chapori, Bharali Chapori.
