BOKAJAN: Smuggling of illegal liquor into the dry State of Nagaland and Manipur seems to have resumed after a pause as Assam Police, in a surprise raid, seized 550 cases of IMFL manufactured in Meghalaya from the Laharijan area along Assam-Nagaland border in Karbi Anglong district on Thursday.

"Based on specific information, a joint team of police and excise personnel intercepted a truck bearing registration No AS01-PC-4897 at Laharijan and during search, the team found 550 cases of IMFL manufactured in Meghalaya in the truck," said an excise official.

"The consignment was hidden under plastic goods. It was brought from Ninthmile area of Meghalaya near Guwahati and was supposed to be delivered at Imphal in Manipur," the official said.

The approximate value of the seized consignment is reported to be Rs 15 lakh. Two persons including the driver and helper of the vehicle have been arrested in this connection.

Earlier, IMFL manufactured in Arunachal Pradesh found its way to Nagaland through this border point. However, strict action taken by the police and the excise department reduced the volume of the illegal trade through this border.

"It is a new trend of smugglers to sell IMFL manufactured in Meghalaya, Nagaland and Manipur. We have reasons to believe that such illegal trade may take place due to upcoming Christmas celebration," he added.
