TANGLA: Continuing its operation on the trucks carrying illegally mined stone and sand, the forest officials under Dhansiri Forest Division in Udalguri district, in a joint operation with Tangla Police, seized three trucks at Tangla town carrying illegally mined stone and sand from the rivers of Indo-Bhutan border areas of Udalguri on Monday.

There is a flourishing syndicate trade of stone and sand by a section of unscrupulous contractors and businessmen of Guwahati, Mangaldai and Tangla who have been trading these materials for construction purposes across the State.

The Tangla Forest Beat Office and Paneri Forest Beat Office officials, along with team of Tangla Police, seized three dumpers bearing registration numbers AS13C5542, AS01FC8973 and AS13C5342 which were carrying these materials through the Mangaldai-Bhutiachang road. Sources divulged that the trucks and dumpers of politically-backed businessmen take multiple trips with a single challan and carry excess load than permitted, thereby causing huge revenue loss to the government.

There have also been multiple road accidents and deaths owing to such over-loaded vehicles which lose control resulting in fatal mishaps. The dubious role of the district administration, district transport office personnel and forest officials have largely been questioned by conscious circles.
