Guwahati: In a major development, all the Sainik Schools across the country have opened their admissions for girl students. The prestigious Goalpara Sainik School in Assam will also be enrolling female students in Class VI from the academic year 21-22. This is a golden chance for the girls who aspire to learn and join the defence services in the future.

The Public Relations Officer of Defence, Guwahati, Lt Col P Khongsai said, "With this, talented girls from the state will get a golden opportunity to prepare themselves from an early age to serve the nation by joining Indian Defence Services. Accordingly, the school will arrange for the necessary infrastructure, education, and adequate training to impart wholesome growth in the girls of the region."

First established in the year 1961 by V.K. Krishna Menon, the Sainik Schools were set up to sort out the regional and class imbalance amongst the Officer cadre of the Indian Military, and to prepare students mentally and physically for entry into the National Defence Academy (NDA) and Indian Naval Academy (INA). V.K. Krishna Menon was the then Defence Minister of India.

Presently, there are around 33 Sainik schools functioning in the country.

The Goalpara Sainik School was set up in the year 1964. Around 300 of its ex-students have joined the Defence Forces as Officers.
