GUWAHATI: In an incident that took place on last Saturday, a vehicle caught fire with people still inside it. The incident took place on National Highway 515 near the Rayang area in the Dhemaji district of Assam. And a team from the Indian army not only rescued the people but also cleared the chaos that followed.
Troops of the Red Shield Division of the Indian Army rescued the driver and five passengers from the burning vehicle. The people were stuck inside and unable to take action due to shock and trauma. They were later shifted to a safe location after being rescued. Timely rescue and dousing of the fire by the team from Red Shield Division prevented any grievous injury to the people onboard. Post-rescue, they also ensured that normal traffic movement was restored, which grinded to a halt due to the accident.
The III Corps is a very old unit of the Indian Army which participated in World War I under the British. It was reorganised during World War II and fought in the Battle of Singapore before India's independence. Rangapahar Military Station in Dimapur in the Northeastern state of Nagaland is the home of the III Corps which is also known as the Red Shield Division. With the 57 Mountain Division under its control, this unit is tasked with the responsibility of safeguarding the Arunachal Pradesh borders and those with Myanmar. It also maintains preparedness for any possible war with China in the Northeastern frontier.
The armed forces of India often work in tandem with other organisations to provide rescue services across the country. During the recent avalanche in Uttarakhand where a total of 61 people were stuck, the Indian Air Force joined hands to provide helicopter search and rescue services. In Assam, the Indian Army rescued the passengers of a train when it was stuck because of severe landslides near Haflong.
