The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has taken up projects for the expansion and upgrading of the Dibrugarh airport. Director of Dibrugarh Airport, S.K. Garg said these projects are scheduled to be executed in the next couple of years.

The construction of a new road around the acquired land for the runway expansion project is currently in progress and that required portion of the road for completing the project is going to be made available to AAI authorities at Dibrugarh very soon.

The runway at Dibrugarh Aiport will be expanded to 7500 feet from the current 6000 feet to accommodate the landing and take-off of aircraft like Airbus 320 without having to sacrifice load penalty.

The Airport Director also added that the remaining part of the work on the project is expected to be completed by next year.

The airport is also going to be connected to the newly opened Dibrugarh – Tinsukia bypass road via a 1.3 km straight road.

This new road will increase the accessibility to the airport and reduce the time required by passengers to reach the airport.

In addition to these, an integrated terminal building is being planned, in addition to the existing 250 arrivals plus 250 departure passenger capacity 10,000 square metres. The Airports Authority of India has placed a request before the Assam government for the acquisition of 70 acres of land for constructing the same.

A third aerobridge is also being added to the terminal to cope with the increasing volume of aircraft and passenger movements at Dibrugarh airport.

The construction of a 27.5-metre-high new air traffic control tower at the airport has also commenced.

The airport director also informed that on an average 2000 incoming and outgoing passengers are using the airport on a daily basis at present and the movement of cargo through the airport amounts to 130 tonnes per month.

The old terminal building at the airport is being renovated to be used as a cargo terminal to take up the potential business of cargo movement through the airport.

A hanger to house an Airbus 321 type aircraft is also coming up at the airport. Aircrafts arriving in the evening and departing in the morning will be facilitated by the hanger.
