SILCHAR: Even after eight days, Cachar police had not succeeded in tracing the two murder convicts who had escaped from Silchar jail. In this backdrop, Inspector General (Prison) Pubali Gohain on Wednesday made on spot inspection of the jail. Gohain however avoided the queries of the mediaperson as she argued that since police investigation was on, it was not proper to make any comment.

On May 10, two murder convicts Hifzur Rahman and Deep Nunia escaped from the central jail by digging out a tunnel on the walls of the toilets. Interestingly all the CCTV cameras installed inside the jail were found faulty, and hence no footage could be ascertained. Higher authorities had already suspended the jailor and two warders. But in last eight days, police couldn’t trace out the absconding convicts.

Both Hifzur and Deep were facing life sentence for murder. Hifzur, a dreaded criminal, who murdered Naz Ahmed, a teenager of Badarpur after kidnapping him, was in Karimganj jail since 2013. He was accused of running a reign of terror inside the jail, and Hifzur was shifted to Silchar jail on April 10. Just within one, he managed to escape from Silchar Jail.

Meanwhile, during her visit to Silchar Jail, Gohain was informed that there was tremendous paucity of guards in the jail, which presently had 500 inmates. Gohain had reportedly assured that new recruits would be sent to Silchar Jail.
