GOLAGHAT: The Statue of Sudhakantha, Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, was allegedly insulted at the silver jubilee celebrations of Nrityajali Kala Kendra held in Dergoan from January 4 to January 8.

According to reports, a permanent statue of Sudhakantha Bhupen Hazarika was next to the permanent stage of the historic Naren Sharma Memorial Ground in Dergaon, where the Nrityanjali Kala Kendra function was held. When Zubin Garg’s song was going on, the lamp light did not shine on the statue of Sudhakantha. The organiser just put a cloth on the side of the stage where the statue stands.

The conscious people of Dergaon are unable to bear the humiliation meted out to Sudhakantha Bhupen Hazarika.

During the course of Zubin Garg’s music show, a section of the audience condemned the extreme hypocrisy created by a section of the audience. A concerned person in the area alleged that in Dergaon, a particular group is running anarchism in the name of culture. Dergaon has a cultural tradition. Great artistes like Dr. Upen Kakati, Rekibuddin Ahmed, Birendranath Bora, Sangeeta Borthakur, and others were from Dergaon. Over the last few years, however, there have been some groups that have created anarchy in the name of culture.

It is alleged that some people are fulfilling their interests by projecting themselves as businessmen and taking advantage of the simplicity and inaccessibility of the rising young generation.
