Inter-state criminal killed in encounter in Udalguri district

MANGALDAI: A hardcore notorious inter-state criminal has been killed in an encounter with the police in Udalguri district on Friday in which two cops also sustained severe injuries. The deceased criminal has been identified as Kena Ram Basumatary alias Motu alias Basu (35), son of late Sameswar Basumatary of Natun Panbari village near Gelabeel under Orang Police Station in Udalguri district. The police later recovered one sophisticated pistol of 9mm calibre along with several live ammunition from his possession. The encounter took place at about 10.45 am at an orchard of a villager at Dhansirikhuti No.1 village near Daifam market under Rowta Police Station in Udalguri district.

According to information, a team of police acting on a tip off came to know the evil design of the deceased to commit robbery along with one of his aides and police immediately rushed to the spot. The deceased criminal on seeing the police team, open fired upon the police to which the police retaliated, resulting in his instant death. However, his aide managed to flee away from the spot.

In the encounter, Sub Inspector Hira Jyoti Pegu and Constable Sukumar Barman sustained severe injuries and both were immediately admitted in Udalguri Civil Hospital. Injured Constable Sukumar Barman has been referred to Guwahati Medical College Hospital.

The slain criminal was earlier arrested by Arunachal Pradesh Police in connection with Roing Police Station Case Number 38/19 under section 307/ 399/ 402/ 353/ 186 IPC read with section 27(2) of Arms Act in 2019 and by Assam Police in connection with Nalbari Police Station Case Number 628/20 under section 397/427/307 IPC read with section 25(i)(a) of Arms Act. The body of the slain criminal has been sent to Udalguri Civil Hospital for post mortem examination.
