Interstate Drug Dealer From Assam Detained By Odisha STF

GUWAHATI: An interstate drug dealer from Guwahati, Assam, has been taken into custody by the special task force (STF) of the Odisha Police, according to reports on Thursday. Salim Ahmmed, a resident of Mantripukri in Imphal, Manipur, has been named as the accused.

The officer added that Salim was detained in connection with a complaint filed on December 3 of last year by a team of STF with assistance from the Assam Police. A car, 1.335 kg of brown sugar, and some other potentially incriminating items were also taken, according to the police official.

Sections 21(c) and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act were the subject of a complaint filed in this case. Salim, the primary drug dealer, has been missing since the incident and has been hiding in Guwahati, according to the police's official statement. In contrast, two other accused parties were apprehended in the case and sent to court.

The major drug dealer in the aforementioned case was the accused, according to STF Inspector General Jayanarayan Pankaj. Since the incident, he has been evading capture and hiding in Guwahati.

Pankaj added that after obtaining credible information, the STF apprehended Salim and sent him to Odisha on transit remand after presenting him at Guwahati's Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Kamrup (Metro).

Further investigation is ongoing, he noted, and the suspected drug dealer would be presented in the Cuttack District and Session Judge's Court.

Another similar incident occurred recently when police in Assam's Barpeta district opened fire on a reputed drug dealer on Monday night, injuring him. The victim was shot while attempting to elude a police search operation. He was identified as Bisa Miah, a resident of Bhaluki village. He was treated at Barpeta Medical College for a gunshot wound to his right shoulder.

Prior to this, the Assam Human Rights Commission found two authorities responsible for the death of a man charged with theft in a phoney gunfight in 2021. The state government has been ordered by the panel to penalize the two officials and give the deceased's wife Rs 7 lakh in compensation within two months.
