Japanese Encephalitis in Assam: 3 More Deaths Reported, Toll Rises to 47

Most numbers of 44 cases have been detected in Nagaon, followed by Jorhat with 39 cases. A total of 34 cases have also been reported from Golaghat so far.

GUWAHATI: Three more people lost their lives due to Japanese Encephalitis in Assam on Friday, taking the death toll to 47. Meanwhile, seven new cases were reported in the northeastern state in the past 24 hours.

As per the National Health Mission, till now, 294 cases of viral infection have been detected in the state.

Among the latest fatalities, one death each was reported in Barpeta, Chirang and Darrang. Two fresh cases of Japanese Encephalitis were reported from the Jorhat district, while one each was detected in Bongaigaon, Charaideo, Darrang, Dibrugarh and Kokrajhar districts.

Out of 35 districts of Assam, only three districts - South Salmara, Dima Hasao and Karbi Anglong - are not affected by the disease.

Japanese Encephalitis is a viral brain infection caused by mosquitoes, especially during the monsoon flood season which starts in May and extends till October. Every year many people die due to infection and malaria during this period in the state.
