JORHAT: Activists of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) in association with the Jorhat district Congress committee stormed the streets of Jorhat after a rally was organized at the Jorhat Stadium complex on Tuesday in protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.
The rally was attended by hundreds of protesters led by APCC president Ripon Bora, Rana Goswami, Nikhil Bharat Congress Committee general secretary, and Dip Gogoi, Jorhat district Congress Committee president. The rally passed through the main thoroughfares of Jorhat city.
The protesters also shouted slogans against CAA. During the protest rally, Ripon Bora heavily flayed the BJP-led Central and State governments and former AASU leaders Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Atul Bora, Keshab Mahanta, Birendra Kumar Baishya, Tapan Gogoi, Amiyo Bhuyan and Himanta Biswa Sarma. He slammed them for selling jati, mati and bheti by implementing the CAA.
Ripun Borah said, “The Congress party is the only option for the people of Assam for peace. In 1955 when undivided Goalpara district was about to be handed over to West Bengal, under the leadership of the Congress it was saved from becoming part of West Bengal.”
Before the rally, the five martyrs of the anti-CAA stir were paid floral tribute at the venue of the protest site in the premises of the Jorhat Stadium.
Moreover, two members of Sanmilito Lachit Sena, Assam - Manoj Kumar Bordoloi and Debojit Baruah –shaved their heads in protest against CAA and staged demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office on Tuesday.
