Guwahati: A charge sheet has been submitted by the Jorhat Police on 17 January in connection with the Animesh Bhuyan lynching case. As many as 14 people have been accused in this case including the prime accused Neeraj Das alias Kola Lora who died in an accident while he was in police custody.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to his official Twitter handle to inform about this new development.

"As promised @jorhatpolice has charge-sheeted 14 accused persons (one has since died & one is Child in conflict with law) in the infamous Animesh Bhuyan assault and murder in 50 days. Police has been directed to have expeditious trial," the CM tweeted.

The incident unraveled when Animesh, who runs a printing press, along with two others, Mridusmanta Baruah, cultural secretary of Brahmaputra Anchalik unit of AASU near Dergaon and a friend Pranoy Dutta had come to pick up some equipment near the truck stand.

It was then that Mohan Das (71), fell from his scooty and Mridusmanta alighted from their vehicle to help him up. Mohan Das allegedly accused Mridusmanta of being responsible for his fall and began hitting him with the keys of his scooty.

When Animesh came to stop Das from attacking Mridusmanta, he created a ruckus and a mob gathered allegedly led by Kola Lora, who is the son of Mohan Das, which beat up the three. By the time the police arrived and took them to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital, Animesh had passed away and he was declared death.

A day after Animesh's death, thousands of people had gathered in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office complex in response to a call given by the AASU to stage a protest against the lynching.

Jorhat mourned Animesh's death with shops voluntarily downing shutters and very few public vehicles were seen on the roads.
