SIVASAGAR: Joutha Sangrami Mancha (JSM) demanded removal of encroachments from the two water bodies located amidst Sivasagar town viz. historic Jamuna and Moridikhow. JSM also demanded action against the encroachers who encroached upon the water bodies.
In a memorandum sent to the Assam Chief Minister and the State Revenue Minister through Sivasagar Deputy Commissioner recently, the Mancha pointing out the fact that the Jamuna Canal which was created when the excavated earth of the canal was used to construct the peripheral embankment of the historic Borpukhuri, is an integral part for sustaining the balance of the ecosystem. Due to illegal encroachment, the Jamuna Canal was shrunk in size which resulted in inundation of the town with a lower intensity of downpour creating artificial floods.
Similarly, rampant encroachment also threatened the existence of Moridikhow, stated the memorandum signed by Debajit Dutta, Pankaj Mout, Waliful Rahman, Ranjan Bordoloi and Utpal Buragohain. They demanded to remove all the encroachments on the water bodies and restore them back to their original status.
