SILCHAR: Amid utter indiscipline in the party in Karimganj, Satu Roy resigned from the district president's post. Satubabu, who was the district president for last 21 years, had sent his resignation letter to the State body on Saturday. However, on Sunday he informed that the State Congress had asked him to continue.

Satu Roy, the all-weather old man of Karimganj Congress, said the party was going through a rough time and he should not have fled away at this crucial juncture. But the State body had disapproved his proposal for revamping the district body. Satubabu in a categorical statement said, he resigned to protect his self-respect which the State committee had not recognized.

Following the Rajya Sabha election debacle, two MLAs from the district were at loggerheads. Mud slinging was at its best in Karimganj which recently erupted into an open-for-all fight inside the party office that left local MLA Kamalakha Dey Purkayastha sustaining minor injury. Siddeque Ahmed, the expelled MLA from South Karimganj, blamed Kamalakha for his ouster from the party. Ahmed, who was shown the door by the party for his alleged betrayal in the Rajya Sabha election, said a central leader of the party along with Purkayastha hatched a conspiracy against him.

The district Congress general secretary Pankaj Nag had ealier resigned from the party accusing Purkayastha of appeasing Muslims. Meanwhile, Purkayastha, who is also the working president of the State unit, said he would talk to the State president regarding Satubabu's resignation.
