SILCHAR: After long agitation over their outstanding demands, at last, the State Cabinet decided to grant a monthly pay package of Rs 6,500 to each PHE casual worker across the State. The Karimganj division of PHE casual workers agreed to the offer of the pay but with a rider unless proper justice is done to them, they will go for a stronger movement along with their comrades of the State. Barak Valley zone of casual PHE workers' union has extended greetings to all the employees on casual and temporary basis for maintaining unity and for collective fight for justice.
Bapan Namashudra, secretary of Barak Valley Casual Workers' Parishad, at a press meet held on Saturday at Karimganj said the declaration by PHE Minister Ranajit Das following Cabinet decision about grant of Rs 6, 5000 each month is a half battle won, yet something has been achieved. Such a meagre amount as a monthly grant can hardly justify 'both ends meet.' He called upon the casual workers to be in readiness for another long drawn battle while congratulating them for the partial success.
Voicing the demand of PHE casual and temporary workers for regularization of their services and settlement of all their pending demands, Bapan Namasudra insisted the State government should accept and implement them at an early date. He thanked Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma who after their meeting with him during his visit to Karimganj on September 19 assured them of necessary measures to meet their demands.
It was really a positive step that the most dynamic Chief Minister kept his words within two months. It is like showing light in the midst of darkness. Workers are hopeful their other demands will also get proper attention. They were on indefinite cease work from December 1, but the positive signal from the State prompted them to change their decision.
