SILCHAR: It is like the well known adage, 'Rob Peter to pay Paul.' A police officer attached with main police station of Karimganj has been on joy ride with his family on a car that was stolen and lying after its seizure in the campus of the Sadar Thana. According to information from the border town, a costly vehicle was recovered from the house of one of the masterminds behind coal scam, Birendra, during hot chase by police. Subsequently, it came out that the vehicle in question was stolen.

The police kept the court informed of the seizure of the car and its custody with them. The vehicle has been kept well in front of the police station for the last two 45 days. But, from time to time, the vehicle used to be taken elsewhere in the darkness of night. It could not evade the attention of journalists of border town. They brought it to the notice of SP Padmanath Barua who took cognizance of it and ordered proper inquiry.

Within two hours, the second police officer-in-charge, Manirul Islam, rushed to Sadar Thana with stolen car, but not before dropping an accused in the case of theft at a convenient place on the way. On the order of the court, the vehicle was placed on the campus of the police station. An insider in the police station said the second officer was on leave and used the car for his own purpose. SP Padmanath Barua said action would be taken against Manirul Islam.

Further information with the police is that Birendra has purchased the car Toyota with M L 0 4 D number after making payment of Rs 16 lakh. Its registration is in the name of Abul Barbhuiya. Birendra did not have any valid documents. This might be a stolen car, it is believed. A few months back, Karimganj police received a phone call from Meghalaya police seeking information about a Toyota car stolen from there. It will now be interesting to know what action is initiated against second officer Manirul Islam for violating the court order.
