SILCHAR: As the pressure mounted following the road blockade by Assam University students, Biswarup Bhattacharjee, president of Karimganj Yuva Morcha, surrendered to Cachar police on Sunday.

Biswarup, former president of the Assam University Students' Union, was accused of physically assaulting Biswajit Rudrapaul, a research scholar. Following an FIR lodged by Biswajit against Biswarup and his friend Krishangshu Chakraborty, students of the university blocked the Silchar-Hailakandi road on Saturday demanding immediate arrest of the accused. Students alleged that Biswarup and Krishnagshu Chakraborty had assaulted Biswajit as he asked them not to smoke inside the room since he had breathing problem.

He had come out of his room at 1.10 am to approach the police, but Biswarup and Krishnagshu tried to stop him, Biswajit further alleged. "I also have a recorded video clip where they can be heard abusing me. Biswarup has hit me with a pressure cooker on my head," Biswajit added.

Sources in the Silchar Sadar police said the Assam University police outpost would now take Biswarup into their custody.
