GUWAHATI: Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the word "Mama" are apparently synonymous in Assam. The term has now crossed the state's boundaries and reached the national platform of popular television show Kaun Banega Crorepati in which a contestant was asked on Monday about the Assam chief minister's nickname.
During the show, one of the contestants was asked – By which of these names is the chief minister of Assam often addressed in the state. Four options were there including Chacha, Mama, Tau and Kaka.
Soon after the question was asked in KBC, posts and pictures related to the same started flooding social media with netizens expressing their joy and happiness over the fact that the name "Mama" had become such a big name.
Himanta, who is the BJP's key strategist in the Northeast region, has become one of the most popular political leaders not just in the NE region, but also in the country. His ability to manage successful political campaigns in difficult, adverse circumstances makes him one of the most sagacious and smart leaders in the region. Born on February 1, 1969, Himanta is the 15th chief minister of Assam. He was elected as an MLA for the first time from Jalukbari assembly constituency in the year 2001 when he defeated Asom Gana Parishad's Bhrigu Kumar Phukan.
Himanta, who used to be the "blue eyed boy" of former chief minister late Tarun Gogoi, quit from the Congress after political disagreements with the Congress leadership and joined the BJP in August, 2015.
