Kokrajhar Deputy Commissioner Varnali Deka holds review meeting on flood

A review-cum-preparedness meeting with the members of Technical Committee of Urban Flood of Kokrajhar district was held under the chairmanship of Varnali Deka

KOKRAJHAR: A review-cum-preparedness meeting with the members of Technical Committee of Urban Flood of Kokrajhar district was held under the chairmanship of Varnali Deka, Deputy Commissioner and Chairperson of District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Kokrajhar in the conference hall of office of the Deputy Commissioner, Kokrajhar on Monday.

The meeting was graced by Lawrence Islary, MLA of 30-Kokrajhar East (ST) LAC, Additional Deputy Commissioners, Chairperson of Kokrajhar Municipal Board (KMB), heads of concerned departments and resource persons from Central Institute of Technology (CIT) and BB Engineering College, Kokrajhar.

In the meeting, Deputy Commissioner Varnali Deka took stock of the current status of flood in Kokrajhar town and reviewed the causes of the flash flood and water logging problems in Kokrajhar town, including the measures being taken by various departments from the Chairperson of KMB, Executive Engineer of Water Resources and Deputy Director of Town and Country Planning.

After a thorough discussion, Kokrajhar Deputy Commissioner Varnali Deka asked the Circle Officer of Kokrajhar, Executive Engineers of Irrigation and Water Resources departments, Assistant Director of Town and Country Planning, District Programme Officer (DPO) of DDMA to conduct a joint survey and submit the report her within a week. KMB Chairperson would coordinate regarding the same.

The House also decided that the Executive Engineer of the Water Resources Department would prepare a project for setting up of trolley mounted pumps earmarked to draw artificial water from Kokrajhar city as per State Disaster Mitigation Fund (SDMF) rules and submit them to the State government through DDMA of Kokrajhar. Regarding widening of railway culverts on railway tracks passing through Kokrajhar town and construction of drain outlets under City Infra Development Fund (CIDF), she instructed the Chief Executive Officer of DDMA, Kokrajhar to co-ordinate with the Railway department. In addition to this, the resource persons represented from CIT and BB Engineering College, Kokrajhar were requested to conduct a spot study involving their research scholars and senior students to find a long-term solution to the flood and water logging problem in Kokrajhar town.

Deputy Commissioner also requested the KMB Chairperson to create awareness by sensitising the citizens of Kokrajhar town on issues related to waste disposal through social media and other media.
