Kokrajhar district administration takes measures to avoid accidents

KOKRAJHAR: The Kokrajhar district administration has taken up several preventive measures to avoid accidents especially on the occasion of New Year celebrations in the district. Following the direction of Chief Minister of Assam Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma to ensure accident-free December 31 and January 1, and road safety the year around, Kokrajhar Deputy Commissioner, Varnali Deka, chaired a multi-stakeholder discussion on Thursday with SP, Kokrajhar, ADCs, SDOs, Circle Officer, Assistant Commissioners, BDOs, officials of Excise, Health, Transport and Fire & Emergency Services to discuss preventive measures and necessary steps so that no road accident takes place in Kokrajhar district.

The Kokrajhar DC Deka said from January to November, 2021, 159 road accidents have been reported with 97 fatalities and 125 injuries in Kokrajhar district. She said in this connection, task forces had been constituted for each circle, headed by Circle Officers, with the mandate to take necessary steps to prevent road accidents, to check sale of illicit liquor, and consumption of liquor, accidents or any other untoward incident in picnic spots. Circle Officers have been directed to map and visit all formal/informal picnic spots under their jurisdiction, convene meetings with the concerned task forces and picnic spot committees.

To ensure safety and safe arrival of picnickers to their respective destinations, the DC requested all picnickers to leave picnic spots by 4pm. She said Pratirodhi Bandhus had been geared up for the cause and along with picnic spots management committees/local NGOs, they will work in close tandem with Circle Offices in this regard. DTO has been directed to map accident-prone areas and maintain strict vigil. She also said strong actions as per traffic rules such as suspension of license would be taken in case of drunk driving and violation of road safety rules like not wearing helmets, seat belts. Further, all officials of the district administration have been directed by the Deputy Commissioner to maintain strict vigil on the field on these two days. A meeting was held in the conference hall of DC's office in Kokrajhar on Wednesday.
