Guwahati: Gautam Dev Sharma from Assam's Kokrajhar district will be conferred for 'National Award to Teachers 2020' by the Union ministry of human resource development (HRD).
Similarly, a Shillong-based Physics teacher, Rahul S Chatterjee, brought laurels to Meghalaya after being selected for the prestigious 'National Award to Teachers 2020.'
While Sharma is a science teacher of Kokrajhar Government HS and MP School, who hails from Basugaon in Chirang district, Chatterjee is an Assistant Lecturer (Physics) of Shillong Jail Road Boys' Higher Secondary School.
The Shillong based teacher Chatterjee, was honoured with the prestigious "International High School Teacher Programme" fellowship for a two-week training programme at CERN, Geneva, Switzerland. He was the only teacher from India selected for this fellowship.
In 2017, Chatterjee was awarded the Lokmani Lal Award for Excellence in Secondary Teaching. In 2012, Chatterjee received the highly-acclaimed "International Leaders in Education Programme" (ILEP) fellowship to the United States. In 2009, he was conferred with the "Science Teacher Award" by the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI), NER Local Chapter.
Gautam Dev Sharma and Mr Chatterjee are among 47 teachers who will be conferred with the award during the Teacher's Day celebrations on September 5 in New Delhi.
Three others from Northeast -- Archana Gurung and Lomas Dhungel from Sikkim, and Sanjay Das from Tripura -- have also been selected for the prestigious award.
The purpose of National Awards to Teachers is to celebrate the unique contribution of some of the finest teachers across the nation and to honour those teachers who, through their commitment and industry, have not only helped in the upliftment of the quality of school education but also enriched the lives of their students.
