KPC, JUA, and IJU condemn harassment and atrocities on journalist in Nagaon, Assam

The Journalists' Union of Assam (JUA), Kokrajhar Press Club (KPC), and the Indian Journalists' Union (IJU) vehemently condemned the ill-treatment of journalist Deepankar Medhi by Nagaon District Commissioner Narendra Kumar Shah recently.

KOKRAJHAR: The Journalists' Union of Assam (JUA), Kokrajhar Press Club (KPC), and the Indian Journalists' Union (IJU) vehemently condemned the ill-treatment of journalist Deepankar Medhi by Nagaon District Commissioner Narendra Kumar Shah recently. They demanded severe punishment for the perpetrators.

On Monday, the members of the Kokrajhar Press Club staged a protest demonstration in front of the Press Club with black badges to express anguish over the assault on journalists in Nagaon recently. The KPC demanded an inquiry and action on the incident.

The president of JUA, Samim Sultana Ahmed, and general secretary, Dhanjit Kumar Das, stated that during a telephonic conversation with journalist Deepankar Medhi, he said the commissioner himself physically assaulted Medhi and behaved very rudely with him. His security guards also surrounded the journalist and took away his cameras. The commissioner's behaviour did not stop there. The journalist was held at Nagaon police station for a long time. Ahmed strongly condemned the incident and torture of journalists by the police administration, expressed deep concern, and warned the administration to refrain from such acts.
