DIBRUGARH: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) has encouraged people of the rural areas in Dibrugarh district to practice kitchen garden farming.

Interacting with the farm women of Madhupur Deori Gaon here, subject matter specialist in Agricultural Economics and Farm Management, Hemchandra Saikia , as Krishi Vigyan Kendra resource person, said that a kitchen garden could provide each household all the essential vitamins and minerals required for a disease-free healthy life He further said, "A kitchen garden can play a significant role in reducing malnutrition problem that human being are facing, besides offering some economic relief to poor rural households."

Citing a series of data and survey report of the World Health Organization (WHO) on malnutrition, a pressing global challenge, Saikia said that an effective kitchen garden could fulfil household requirements of people by growing year-round vegetables, fruits, medicinal and herbal plants. "A step can immensely pave the way for reducing malnutrition and also help for better standard of living with sustainable development," said Saikia. Sangeeta Bora Saikia, an expert in community science, who also took part in the programme as a resource person, demon-strated before farm women how to prepare nutritious dal, which is an important component of poshan thali.
