LAKHIMPUR: The Lakhimpur district unit of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) expressed a strong reaction against the government’s alleged oppression over AASU and AJYCP agitators in Nalbari district on Wednesday.

Notably, police and CRPF personnel barbarously assaulted several AASU activists who showed black flag to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal at Dahudi under Dharmapuri LAC in Nalbari district against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, while the Chief Minister was going to Sarthebari Na-Xatra Ashram from Guwahati.

Lakhimpur AASU vehemently condemned the physical assault on non-violent AASU agitators by police and CRPF personnel. Protesting against the incident, the activists of the organization, led by Lakhimpur district AASU general secretary Dhanmoni Dutta, burnt the effigies of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Thursday at Girls’ HS School Chariali in North Lakhimpur town.

Regarding the issue, Dhanmondi Dutta said, “The State Government is adapting dominating and divisive principle to silence the anti-CAA agitation. As a part of such a policy, AASU activists in Nalbari were severely beaten. We vehemently condemn the incident. We once again make it clear that we never accept the black Act and intensified agitation against it will go on.”

The North Lakhimpur regional AASU president Pranjit Gogoi and general secretary Punamjyoti Burhagohain also became vocal against the State Government regarding the incident. The protesters rocked the environment by shouting slogans against Sonowal. The organization warned the government not to oppress the non-violent anti-CAA agitators.

On the other hand, Lakhimpur AASU and 30 ethnic organizations will stage torchlight rally on Friday across the district to demand the scrapping of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019.
